Vendor-client relationship in real-world situations

Awhile back, Computerworld ran a column in which the author suggested that "Renegotiating contracts so they're less favorable to vendors need not be accompanied by guilt."

If IT clients can haggle a better price with vendors, then why not regular consumers with other merchants as well? Observe when happens when the vendor-client relationship spills over into the real world:
