Back to the Future

A Brief History of Thigh-High Boots

For fall, the thigh-high boot dominated the runways. At nearly every show, suede and leather varieties appeared, making it clear that this tough — yet sexy — trend is here for good. We tracked the style through the ages, beginning with The Three Musketeers and ending with several of our favorite fashion-show looks.

Diesel’s Fall ’09 Collection Inspired by ‘Dripping’ and ‘Weathered’

A gem from the Cut in-box: "Diesel is currently previewing their Fall 09 collection, which takes inspirations from all things weather related and concepts such as rain, dripping, weathered, cloth faded by water and the overall effects of what weather can do to fabrics." Grammar is so last year. (Oh, and send us more e-mail here.)

Michael Bastian Can’t Afford His Own $600 Shorts

Michael Bastian Can?t Afford His Own $600 Shorts

Photo: Patrick McMullan

The Times "Styles" section has a lovely piece today about why men are going gaga for Michael Bastian's line. The ex–Bergdorf-men's-fashion director, you see, cuts a pair of men's khaki bottoms — shorts, pants, what have you — in a way that is not gay, yet is slim enough to make men feel fashionable. However those awesome-fitting pants are not cheap. The Times wrote two weeks ago about Bastian's $540 khaki shorts with boxer briefs sewn inside. This week, Bastian confesses that his prices are absurd. “It’s crazy,” he said. “I can’t even afford my clothes.” Finally, a designer who says what we're all thinking! Bastian hopes to cut his prices by 30 percent. His dress shirts can cost $425, his pants $550, and his sport coats $1,150. However, if he does cut prices, Italian luxury brand Brunello Cucinelli might not be able to make his line anymore, which means Bastian probably wouldn't be able to use the same fine Italian materials. “Right now, it hurts a little too much,” Bastian said of his prices. “It should hurt a little, but it shouldn’t kill ’em. That’s the law of designer clothes.” Then again if men are so in love with his stuff (his line is in 54 stores and turned $3 million in sales last year), maybe he doesn't need to lower prices. Sweet of him to care, though.

Scantily Clad Hotties

Nude Carla Bruni Photo Auctioned for $19,600

The latest photo in the Carla Bruni nude series was auctioned in Berlin today. An anonymous bidder paid $19,600 for it! The auction house appraised the picture — one of ten prints — at $3,568–$4,997. However, the photography expert at the auction house would probably argue that this person is out of their damn mind for paying almost $20,000 for the photo. "I really don't know why there is such a hype," Schmidt said. "For us it is not the highlight." It might be that she is the First Lady of France and lying naked on a bed. Though this photo impressively fetched roughly four times the asking price, it comes nowhere close to beating the nude photo of Carla that Christie's auctioned last year for $91,000 — 30 times the asking price. We bet that guy feels like a chump. Click on to see the $20,000 picture.

NSFW, obviously. »

We Love

We Love ... Tom Binns

We Love ... Tom Binns

Photo: Getty Images, Courtesy of Tom Binns

Born in Belfast, Tom Binns's no-nonsense personality combined with an anarchic wit have been the foundation for his philosophy in jewelry design. (He once took photos of the crown jewels and used the actual laminated images in his own jewelry.) He plays with the concept of high-low, demystifies "diamonds" by painting them in neon colors, and elevates ordinary sea glass to gem status. His work is intelligent and humorous, and Michelle Obama has also discovered his ironic charm and now owns several of his pieces. Here, five reasons why we love his work.

1. His Dada sensibility.
2. The pieces are feminine but tough at the same time.
3. The First Lady wears him — who doesn't love that?
4. His new-ish store is jam-packed with tons of jewelry.
5. Neon is everywhere this season and the color looks fresh on his chunky jewels.

Rich Ladies Stocking Up on $1,200 Leather Rosa Chá Swimsuits

Rich Ladies Stocking Up on $1,200 Leather Rosa Chá Swimsuits

Photo: Imaxtree

The Post reports that Rosa Chá's four-figure bathing suits that you can't even swim in are selling briskly this season. Take for instance the leather suit pictured here, which costs $1,200 and is currently sold out at the Rosa Chá store in Soho. But if you prefer fabrics that might breathe, they also make a $1,200 crystal bikini and a $3,200 Swarovski one-piece. Rosa Chá designer Amir Slama has used fur and oversize mirror detailing on his ultrapractical swimwear in the past. The type of shopper who purchases these items, according to the boutique clerk, has many homes and likes to travel to places like St. Barts and the South of France. They usually buy more than one suit. In that case, we shall eagerly await the television debut of these garments on one of the Real Housewives. Kelly Bensimon would totally rock that leather number. As long as one of the ever-lovely New Jersey cast members doesn't beat her to it.

Oh Dear

Fall 2009 Aquascutum.
Aquascutum Prepares for Layoffs

The future is uncertain for Aquascutum's employees. This week, management announced plans to lay off some of its 400-person workforce starting at the end of June. This news adds to the ongoing shakeup at the London-based company. Just last month, CEO Kim Winser suddenly left her post following the collapse of a buyout deal. Aquascutum's parent company, Renown Inc., has wanted to sell the label since last October, and last week, YGM Trading Ltd. said it may want to buy it. And though no buyout agreement has been reached yet, such a deal could change the outcome for Aquascutum's employees for the better. [WWD]

André Leon Talley: Anna Wintour Loved Her 60 Minutes Profile

How was he not sweating bullets?

How was he not sweating bullets?Photo: Patrick McMullan

Anna Wintour must not have minded that Morley Safer likened Karl Lagerfeld to Count Dracula in his 60 Minutes profile of her. Anna's guy Friday, André Leon Talley, tells Mediabistro she loved it.

André reports Anna was "thrilled" with the piece. "It's 60 Minutes — she was on the same show as Secretary Gates. It was fabulous," proclaimed Andre.

But then again, what wouldn't Anna have liked? Though he told her to her face that people call her a "bitch," Morley said arguably worse things about designers than Anna. Aside from the remarks about Karl, he said John Galliano needs a new tailor. André admitted that Safer's remarks were "a bit dismissive." But the editor might consider himself lucky for escaping Safer's scathing judgments. What would Morley have said of the mauve crocodile coat and purple velvet slippers André wore to the Diane Von Furstenberg resort show yesterday?

American Apparel Has Gone Too Far
American Apparel Has Gone Too Far

American Apparel is trying to bring the scrunchie back. They come in styles ranging from neon to zebra print to lamé to tribal print. Assless tights were one thing, but at least only you, and maybe just one other person, ahem, would know you were wearing them. Sure the eighties are back, but even so, wearing a scrunchie is just a sad cry for attention. [Racked, American Apparel]

Meet the New Girl: Hanna Rundlof

Hanna Rundlof.

Hanna Rundlof.Photo: Imaxtree

Some models take a while to catch a break. But for 16-year-old Hanna Rundlof, it happened almost overnight. After signing with Women last year, the Swedish model debuted at the Alexander McQueen menswear show in June 2008, and only a few months later booked an exclusive with Jil Sander for the spring 2009 runway in September. Those two gigs served as a launching pad for the five-foot-nine beauty. With her exclusive over, she was ripe for the fall season, where she hit the runways in full force: Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld, Maison Martin Margiela, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and Nina Ricci. She also opened Jill Stuart, Armand Basi, Barbara Bui, and Dries Van Noten, and closed Lacoste, Les Copains, and Costume National. Now that's what you call a breakthrough. And with just a few editorials under her belt — Rodeo's April issue and the latest 125 magazine — this girl is just getting started. Currently, she is rumored to be in the upcoming pages of Vogue. But until that happens, you can catch her on the resort runways of Oscar de la Renta, Prada, and Chanel.

Karl Makes Everything Right

Karl Lagerfeld to Lend Voice to Cartoon Villain
Karl Lagerfeld to Lend Voice to Cartoon Villain

Karl Lagerfeld will do the voice for a character in French animated movie Totally Spies. Karl will play the "bad guy," named Fabu, which is, appropriately, one-half of the word "fabulous" (and one of our favorite abbreviations for it). The film comes out on July 22 and is set for worldwide distribution in just about every country except the U.S. This is Karl's first voice-over role, and hopefully his stepping stone to live-action roles. Michelle Obama sure likes her prints. For lunch with Nancy Reagan at the White House yesterday, Michelle wore two pieces by Gap, according to Mrs. O: a floral cardigan and striped T-shirt. She also wore a pencil skirt by Michael Kors. This is the first time MObama's worn Gap since moving into the White House. If any retailer could use a MObama stimulus right now, it's Gap. Versace CEO to Resign

Giancarlo di Risio.

Giancarlo di Risio.Photo: Getty Images

Versace CEO Giancarlo di Risio plans to resign at a board meeting this Friday, reports the New York Times. Speculation that Di Risio would step down surfaced a couple of weeks ago, despite the Versace family's somewhat odd attempts to quiet media reports. Though he is credited with putting the label on sound financial footing since he joined in 2004 (before Versace he was CEO of Fendi), Di Risio has reportedly been clashing with creative director Donatella Versace over her lavish expenditures, such as Mario Testino's $140,000-per-day fee for shooting ad campaigns. Meanwhile the label is struggling in the recession. Last month Versace reported that first-quarter revenue was down 13 percent from a year earlier. The label has also refused to lower prices, so as not to look cheap, while customers flock to stores with sales all around them. This year, the company also brought on an outside consulting firm to help them figure out how to make money again. Di Risio is said to have had no involvement in drafting up those plans. Versace will presumably search for a replacement. But Di Risio has options. Roberto Cavalli is also searching for a CEO.

Over 10,000 people tried to buy Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher's clothing line when it launched online this morning, causing the site to crash. Indeed, Gallagher's been teasing the line for months with online videos of rather impressive production values. In March he put up the first grainy black-and-white video, in which he explains that he decided to do the line, called Pretty Green, because he can't find any clothes he wants to wear. He said he planned to "fucking get rid of" the skinny look. And finally, three months later, Liam has posted a new video! And his clothes are finally available for purchase online to registered users!

Graphic designer and New York native Aimée Wilder is known for her nontraditional wallpaper adorned with mesmerizing patterns of pigeons, snowy slopes, robots, or squatting sumo wrestlers. But for admirers not yet ready to devote a full eight-foot wall to her quirky prints, you can now buy a plush sixteen-inch swath: Wilder turned Analog Nights, one of her most popular designs, into a pillow. The limited-edition cotton cases are hand-screened in images of retro record players, speakers, cassettes, and tape decks, resulting in a decidedly cooler look than the embroidered throw pillows of your youth. The cushions are available in subdued shades of gray, chocolate brown, or turquoise, for an interesting accent that doesn't dominate the room.

Barneys Might Have Avoided Those Bad Financial Problems If They Had Just Hired a Darn CEO

Barneys Might Have Avoided Those Bad Financial Problems If They Had Just Hired a Darn CEO

Photo: Shanna Ravindra, istockphoto

Yahoo Inc. managed to find a new CEO in under two months. Sears needs a new CEO, too, but they've got an interim CEO until they find one. Children's Place is also searching for a CEO, and operating with an interim CEO while they interview qualified candidates. Barneys, on the other hand, has been without a CEO for more than a year. They have no interim CEO. And no prospects. But that's okay, because they have seven vice-presidents playing CEO together. And even without them, the company could practically run itself, right? Because it's not like they're having all sorts of problems, you know, paying vendors or selling merchandise or maintaining stock at a desirable investment grade. Kidding! All of those things are problems! Barneys is a mess, and not having a CEO doesn't help.
