Anpanman Theme Composer Takashi Miki Passes Away

posted on 2009-05-11 02:39 EDT
Miki also wrote theme songs for Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Prince anime

Takashi Miki, the composer of dozens songs including the signature "Anpanman no March" theme song of the Soreike! Anpanman franchise, passed away in a Okayama City hospital on Monday at 6:05 a.m. He was 64. Miki, whose real name was Tadashi Watanabe, was born in Tokyo in 1945. He wanted to be a singer after graduating from junior high school, but taught himself to compose music instead.

Miki made his professional debut in 1967 and then wrote the theme song for the Jack to Mame no Ki (Jack and the Beanstalk) anime film in 1974. He also composed the "Hoshi no Ōjisama Petit Prince" theme song for The Adventures of the Little Prince anime series (1978) and the Dreaming duo's theme song for Anpanman's 1988 television premiere. The Anpanman anime projects still use the "Anpanman no March" song, over two decades later. Even after Miki underwent surgery for throat cancer in 2006, he continued to write music.
