Test Center: Sun's stellar NAS in a can
Not so long ago, I tested the Sun Fire X4500 Storage Server, aka Thumper, which went on to win InfoWorld's 2008 Technology of the Year award for Best Storage Server. Thumper was a dual-CPU, dual-core Opteron-based server running OpenSolaris and housing a whopping 48 3.5-inch SATA drives, all within a 4U chassis. The sheer size and scale of that storage server could only be handled by Sun's own ZFS file system. Thumper was a tank in every sense of the word and carved a niche for itself in a wide variety of infrastructures.
Review: 3 NAS devices offer big-time storage for small networks
With today's storage requirements heading into terabyte territory, NAS devices are becoming popular for homes and small businesses. We check out three new units at different price/performance points.
Review: Maxtor's Central Axis -- a networked terabyte for any novice
Maxtor's Central Axis is a network attached storage device that features easy installation and setup and has decent performance, making adding a sharable terabyte a straightforward task.

Fanless, tiny and sprouting 1TB of capacity at the top end, Buffalo Technology's Mini is truly a personal NAS device.
50%-off storage
Going far beyond the basic integration and certification activities that one would expect for support of a popular application, storage vendors are integrating management functionality and working to develop other ways to distinguish and differentiate their VMware support, and with that have come some bold claims.
Review: Western Digital's home NAS array
The Western Digital ShareSpace home/small office NAS array is simple to set up and use, but not the speediest box when compared to single drives. Load it down with video, audio, application installations files, drivers and then use it as a data well.
Opinion: Choosing the right backup interface
Companies should focus on certain fundamental options, such as selecting a backup appliance with the right interface. Although de-duplication ratios and offsite replication are exciting, do not forget why you wanted disk to begin with -- to ensure successful backups in shorter times.
To help you simplify server connectivity throughout your SAN environment, Brocade has introduced a new family of high-performance 4 Gbit/ sec Fibre Channel HBAs. Providing server connectivity products is the next logical step in fulfilling Brocades mission to deliver enterprise-class, end-to-end storage networking solutions. With the introduction of Brocade server connectivity solutions, Brocade is now extending fabric based services to data center server platforms for dependable and high-performance storage access. This new class of HBA is designed to help IT organizations deploy and manage true end-to-end Storage Area Network (SAN) services across next-generation data centers. This paper highlights the benchmark results obtained by Finisar Medusa Labs Test Services. Server virtualization is transforming the way IT delivers services back to the business. Companies are leveraging this technology to consolidate servers, increase utilization, and reduce costs. Before exploring the primary drivers of server virtualization, it is important to understand the role server virtualization plays in the data center. View Entire Zone |
