HP MediaSmart Server ex487
The Hewlett-Packard MediaSmart Server ex487 stands tall, with four drive bays--two with a 750GB drive in each, and two available for user upgrades. The unit is the only one we looked at that uses Microsoft's feature-packed, but sometimes slow Windows Home Server software, which uses a process called folder duplication instead of RAID to span available disk storage across what you see as a single, redundant volume (in this case, for about 1.3GB of total usable storage).
Linksys by Cisco Media Hub 410 1TB
The Linksys by Cisco Media Hub 410 1TB easily offers the friendliest media-serving Web interface of the NAS boxes we recently evaluated. It's the only unit aside from Synology's DS209+ and the HP MediaSmart that lets you play and view media on your PC via the Web-based configuration interface; however, it trumps its rivals with its ability to play video as well as audio files and photos. The video you'll see is reduced considerably in size, but at least you can preview it before downloading it to your local machine.
Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive
The slim, well-ventilated Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive isn't fancy. But this 1TB drive serves up media with the best of them.
Synology Disk Station DS209+
The Synology Disk Station DS209+ has lots of benefits: Compact, two-bay design; user-accessible drives; speedy performance; and RAID 0, 1, and JBOD configurations (it supports up to 3TB of storage; PC World tested the 1TB RAID version in a mirrored RAID 1 setup).
Western Digital My Book World Edition 1TB
The 1TB Western Digital My Book World Edition is a handsomely styled, well-ventilated single-drive NAS box that streamed normal and high-resolution media flawlessly. It also proved easy to configure via browser, with attractive basic- and advanced-mode browser-based configuration pages (the latter mode handles configuring the media-serving portion of the box).
Iomega ScreenPlay Pro HD
The Iomega ScreenPlay Pro HD is a Windows-only stand-alone, single 1TB hard drive and NAS that you can attach to your TV and play media.
