    Acer wants to bring the wholesale cost of smartphones down so far that mobile network operators can afford to give them away. It aims to release two such phones by October, said Aymar de Lencquesaing, the head of Acer's Smart Handheld Business Group.

    The thin and light eSlick device, on display this week at the Cebit trade show, is Foxit's first foray into hardware. Foxit has specialized in creating lightweight and fast desktop and mobile applications for viewing PDF (Portable Document Format) files, a format created by Adobe Systems and adopted as an international standard in July 2008. The eSlick is currently listed at $259.99 ($299.99 MSRP) excluding taxes and shipping fee.
