FBI: Computer crime cost $265M in 2008, an all-time high

Online fraud and other computer schemes cost the US $265 million-up from $239 million in 2007 or an  average of average individual loss was $931.  The FBI said 275,284 complaints were received in 2008 by the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C),-up from 206,884 (33%) over 2007.

EMC in hot water with Justice Dept.

Storage giant EMC is in hot water with the US Department of Justice over alleged government contract kickbacks and conflict of interest questions.

Specifically the DOJ today filed a complaint accusing EMC of failing to disclose commercial pricing practices during negotiation of General Services Administration (GSA) contracts and of providing improper payments and other things of value to systems on contracts with government agencies.

Sometimes US Census data can be a little outdated upon its release and I have to think this is one of those cases.  Considering that the economic meltdown began in earnest in 2008 and continues unabated this year, its hard to imagine and a number of more recent studies show companies spending less, much less on network gear.

Identity theft morphs, but maintains lead as FTC's top consumer complaint

For the ninth year in a row identity theft - particularly in Arizona and California -- was the number one consumer complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission in 2008.  Of 1,223,370 complaints received in 2008, 313,982 - or 26%- were related to identity theft.
