Web/Interaction Designer

Nymag.com is always on the lookout for web designers to work with our user experience design team -- as of May 2008, we have a three-month freelance opportunity.

The interaction designer works with the information architect, web technologist, and other members of the design and development teams to realize user-centered, beautiful, production-friendly designs for page templates, site navigation, search applications, and other user interface elements and features of nymag.com.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience designing template-based sites or applications
  • Strong functional knowledge of web presentation and UI technologies, particularly in terms of web standards
  • The eye of a graphic designer and the mind of an information architect
  • The assumption that elegance in function and beauty in visual design are not mutually exclusive
  • Capacity to work effectively in collaboration with others to achieve shared goals
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Enthusiasm, curiosity, and flexibility
  • At least three years’ experience as a web designer
  • A portfolio that demonstrates all of the above

Additional web development skills (CSS, XHTML, standards-minded Javascript, Flash/Actionscript) are a big plus.

This is a junior- to mid-level position reporting to the design director.

To apply: E-mail a cover letter, résumé, urls, and compensation requirements to designjobs@nymag.com. Please put "Interaction Designer " in the subject line. No calls please.
