Free Anime Film Screening and Panel Discussion
7 pm, Remis Auditorium
On Wednesday, February 11, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is hosting the internationally acclaimed classic anime feature film, “Grave of the Fireflies,” about two children struggling to survive in a Japan ravaged by World War II.
Following the film, anime experts John W. Dower, Pulitzer prize-winning historian and author of Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II; Roland Kelts, author of JapanAmerica: How Japanese Culture Has Invaded the US; and Frederik L. Schodt, author of Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics will lead a discussion.

Although this run of episodes, which involves some key transitions, initially marks a step out of the Dark Age into which the series had fallen, the reprieve proves only brief. These volumes may have some strong content, but on the whole they stray far from the series at its best.
If Miike was out to recreate the parental discomfort of the TV series... well, mission accomplished. It's just too bad he also recreated the aspects that make cartoons like this Kryptonite to anybody who's gone through puberty.
