    Berlin Intends to sign a peace with East Germany   ending Allied rights in west Berlin
    Berlin The West replies to Russia's ultimatum & negotiates in Geneva
    Nov Berlin Khrushchev issues an ultimatum giving the Western powers 6 months to agree to withdraw from Berlin and make it a free, demilitarized city

    Berlin Russia  withdraws its deadline & instead meets with the Western powers in a Big Four foreign ministers' conference
    Sep Berlin Khrushchev & Eisenhower stated jointly that the most important issue in the world was general disarmament & Berlin to be resolved by negotiation

    Berlin East German   President Walter Ulbricht persuaded the Soviet  s that an immediate solution was necessary & that the only way to stop the exodus was to use force
    Berlin Overall operations for the construction of the Berlin Wall are directed by Marshal Ivan Konev, commander in chief of the GSFG
    Moscow Refugees from east Berlin to west Berlin creates a shortage of labour & skills
   3rd June Vienna Meets Kennedy & will settle with East Germany   if the west signs a peace treaty
   12th Aug Moscow The Warsaw Pact calls on East Germany   for "protection & control" of the Berlin borders
   14th Aug Moscow The border between East & West is sealed off
   17th Aug Moscow Construction of the Berlin Wall begins

    Berlin Overall operations for the construction of the Berlin Wall are directed by Marshal Ivan Konev, commander in chief of the GSFG
1962
Khruschev, Nikita Sergeyevich
    San Cristobal A Russian  nuclear missile site is built in Cuba  
    Berlin The USA  & Russia  withdraw their tanks from the Berlin Wall
    Oct Khrushchev agrees to remove the missiles in exchange for a USA  commitment not to invade Cuba   & that the USA  will remove American MRBMs targeting Russia  from Turkey & Italy  
    Oct Khrushchev wants to locate missiles in Cuba   as a deterrent to a USA  invasion & justifies the move in response to USA  missile deployment in Turkey
   26th Oct Khruschev sends a letter to Kennedy suggesting that the sites would be dismantled if the USA   gave its reassurance that it would not invade Cuba  
   28th Oct Khruschev announces that the sites would be dismantled, as well as, the removal of light bombers
   28th Oct Moscow Khruschev removes the missiles but on the understanding the USA   does not invade Cuba
