Artist, filmmaker, actor, model… and now full-fledged recording artist. Vincent Gallo took five to talk to Dan Grunebaum about his solo debut, When, and why life isn’t necessarily better now that he’s single.


There’s a line in Vincent Gallo’s new album that says, “I’m always sad when I’m lonely.” But somehow it’s hard to connect that delicate, quavering falsetto with the bundle of energy sitting across a coffee table from me, and even harder to mesh this needy image with the self-portrait of a solitary control freak that Gallo paints over the course of an hour-long interview at Shibuya’s new Cerulean Tower hotel.

“I don’t like to hurt people directly, I do it conceptually.”


Gallo admits that many listeners fail to connect the voice-which also featured on the self-produced soundtrack to his indie hit film Buffalo 66-with his commanding features. But, he elaborates, the line provides a window into his psyche. “I’m a person who is very sad when I’m lonely, but I’m only comfortable being alone,” he explains. “So I’m sort of caught in a bad loop, which is that I am completely not open to people, completely used to being alone, but I’m not joyous being alone.”

This is why Gallo has only had two girlfriends in his life, and why no one called him on his birthday in April. But it also holds the key to why he’s been one of the most successful figures to emerge out of the ferment of the 1980s New York downtown scene. The man is driven.

He’s flown in for a three-day flurry of autograph-signing sessions, photo shoots and interviews-slept only an hour or two he says-and I’ve just pinned him down for a chat about When, to be released this week on influential English label Warp.

Although he recorded the soundtrack for the work with which he is most identified, Buffalo 66, and has played in various bands (including Gray with legendary and ill-fated New York compadre Jean Michael Basquiat), When marks Gallo’s first foray into the shark-infested and murky waters of the commercial recording industry.

And, despite the spare guitars, simple lyrics and emotional intimacy of When, Gallo has big aims for the album. He explains that, ever since backing off a near suicide attempt at age 16 after feeling a sense of “unresolved will,” he has stayed alive almost out of spite, to make as much impact as possible.

What I chose to do was use equipment that requires the person who is recording to be a bit more connected with the equipment, to develop a bit more of a feel. Modern equipment takes away the necessity to develop that feel.

“The record is the product of the cumulative search I have been on in music since I was a small boy. It’s one more thing that, if I died today, I feel better about what I have left behind. When I was younger I realized one has to do a lot of work, and have a lot of impact creatively in the mainstream, to have even slight significance in a historic sense, where you are part of the development of language and sensibility. The more things I can accomplish, the better I feel in that way.”

With Buffalo 66, Gallo used locations in his hometown (he fled Buffalo for lower Manhattan at age 16), and presented characters and settings modeled on his childhood, even going so far as to use his own childhood photos. The temptation is to view the film and the new record-which Gallo wrote, performed and produced by himself-as autobiographical. That would be missing the point.

“The truth is Buffalo 66 is completely un-autobiographical,” he explains, glancing pointedly across the table. Likewise, despite the fact that the record is “really who I am,” Gallo says the songs aren’t about him per se. Describing the relationship of the artist to his/her work, Gallo says that he “writes from the memories of those feelings”, which is different from actually writing about oneself.

“My film is sweet, and the record is gentle and sensitive,” he adds. “But I’m not a sensitive person, because when it interferes with control, I become incredibly insensitive.”

Nonetheless, when pinned down on the matter, Gallo admits that last year’s breakup with girlfriend Bethany colored the decidedly lugubrious mood of When. “Let’s just say that I recorded the entire album during the period I was having bad feelings about Bethany, but there isn’t any narrative that is directly related (to her).”

It’s clear, however, that Gallo is still working his way through his feelings on the issue. “I haven’t made myself open to anyone romantically since I’ve broken up with her,” he says. He adds there was a song called “Bethany” that he decided not to put on the record. “But only because it didn’t fit well musically.”

But, you ask, surely women must be throwing themselves at this handsome, intelligent, successful man. “When I’m in a relationship I am very compulsive sexually-I have a very strong sexual urge because I don’t sedate myself in any other way,” he explains. “But I can’t get past the horrific revulsion of acting out sexually. I may think a girl is pretty, but as soon as I come near them I can’t kiss them.

“It’s not a moral thing, but I don’t know how people have dirty, unprotected, drunken, coked-out sex with so many partners, without damaging their spirit. I believe in being open, but I think people are in a dark, misguided mood with their sexual intentions these days.”

The album, concludes Gallo, may not directly express his feelings toward his ex, but it was clearly a way for him to get his mind off things. “During the past year I have arranged to work in a way that prevents me from having any real feelings,” he states.

In the year and a half that it took to record When, Gallo submerged himself in the finer points of antique recording equipment, which he says “has this traditional, ancient sensibility, when things were done as good and as simple as possible.”

He criticizes the contemporary recording process. “What I chose to do was use equipment that requires the person who is recording to be a bit more connected with the equipment, to develop a bit more of a feel. Modern equipment takes away the necessity to develop that feel.”

Despite all this, he claims When is a very modern record. “It’s not Sinatra, it’s not progressive rock. I feel the record sounds like no record that has ever been recorded. It’s got a new sound.”

Gallo says that in his career he “went as far as you can go in a controlling way.” But there are some things you just can’t control. For example, the way he is portrayed by the media. In Japan, it seems, Gallo is supposedly married. Why? “I was doing some advertisements for Parco, and I was engaged to Bethany,” he relates. “But before the April date came I got booked for another job, so at a certain point we just accepted that we were married. We never did the paperwork, but we thought of ourselves as a couple, and we didn’t want to tell our Japanese friends (about the postponement) because it was like a miscarriage. I never was asked, ‘Are you married or not?’ It just sort of spread around, and in my mind we were a couple.”

About a year ago I found out she had been extremely dishonest with me about several things, mostly relating to her behavior with drugs and alcohol, and so I moved away from the relationship about a year ago. I am not married and Bethany and I are not together.”

Gallo did a rare performance in Tokyo following the success here of Buffalo 66. So can we look forward to a tour for When? “If there is a real audience that really feels like they want to see me play live, then I would enjoy that,” he says. But don’t count on it anytime soon. “I am not interested in bringing people through a live performance to my music.”
