If you’ve ever joined a sports team in Japan, odds are you’ve noticed that many of your new teammates, regardless of their talent, have some of the best equipment money can buy. So it’s nice to find quality sports equipment for a bargain—as we did recently at the Ushigome-Kagurazaka branch of the Shop 99 discount retail chain (www.shop99.co.jp). It was here that we stocked up on Finger Bands (¥105)—the absolute latest in Japanese sports fashion—available in all the colors of the ‘bow. BM

Men’s cosmetic store Quomist (www.quomist.jp) has become quite popular among a growing class of young Japanese executives who take their grooming seriously. The three branches, in the Shin-Marunouchi Building, Ueno and Yurakucho, operate like beauty conbini where dudes can get all their skin-care products, deodorants and tanning sprays. When you stop by, be sure to pick up a copy of Quomist Mini Magazine, which last month ran a feature story about all the different ways to wash your face.

We recently happened on Mitsubai (www.mitsubai.com), which translates roughly as “bootlegging.” This online shop sells bizarre works of art and one-of-a-kind goods crafted by local artists, like the Dolls Chandelier (¥81,900), made with a bunch of stuffed animals. Our personal favorite is the chef’s hat/giant fake moustache set (¥3,150). If you’ve got some extra dough and yearn to look like Chef Boyardee, you know what to do. YT
