Kuala Lumpur- The Deputy Premier, Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak said that the percentage of public transport users in Malaysia should be increased to 40 percent from the current 16 percent. He also noted characteristics of a good public transport system.

Dato' Seri Najib also said that the effort to increase this figure is in line with the government's aim to reduce traffic congestion and enhance public transportation integration.

Speaking after witnessing a contract signing ceremony for the purchase of LRT trains by Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad and the lauching of the company's logo, Dato' Seri Najib said a study on public transport in neighbouring countries showed the percentage of users to be more than 30 percent.

He said the government will worked towards the 40 percent by 2020 in stages. At the same function, Dato' Seri Najib also launched the company's new logo.

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad is purchasing 35 new LRT trains from Bombardier Hartasuma for its Kelana Jaya line.
