Valerie Delaney is a woman with a mission. As she explains to community cable host Hugh Malikowski, her “Advanced Life Skills” course at the local college will enable students to “move onward and upward on their life journey.”
Playwright David King introduces us to a series of fast-paced scenes that illustrate, in a comic and usually ill-fated manner, some of the essential life skills of contemporary urban society. Interspersed with the tv interview are scenes such as “fitting in,” “acting your age,” “when to stop eating” and so on. “Life Skills” offers over a dozen delightful cameo roles, each one a small gem for actors and audience alike. The cumulative impact of the author’s humour and insight leaves the audience questioning their own “life skills.”
David King is a master at placing thought-provoking material within a comic framework. Chris Heide, who directed King’s play “Garage Sale” to an enthusiastic response last year at the Chester Playhouse returns to direct “Life Skills.” Many of the same talented cast are also expected to return. Laurel Darnel, Ron Leitold and Catherine Hollett amongst others. |
