Highlander: Search for Vengeance DVD
Gets off on the right foot by skipping all of the murky mythology and opting to go straight for head-lopping action, and then almost immediately plants its foot squarely into the middle of a big steaming pile of post-apocalyptic clichés. But looks great doing it.

009-1 DVD 1
It lacks the plot development and character depth necessary to be truly engaging, but if an occasional dose of sexy cyborg spy action with a classical flavor appeals to you, then this anime update of a '60-era manga is one series you should check out.

Solty Rei DVD 4
The major plot twists in the last volume weren't enough for you? This one offers more. The plot thickens and production merits hit their highest level yet as the series pushes through its second half.

To Heart DVD 1
The mac-and-cheese of anime, pure comfort food that will win fans over because of its homegrown familiarity from scene to scene.

Fruits Basket GN 16
The series again moves deep into drama territory. The incremental evolution of relationships is a treat, while the Kyoko back-story wisely forgoes big revelations and opts instead for simple explication of Tohru's tragic family history.

Good intentions cannot mask the truth: broken Wii controls and frustrating game design make this a game that every gamer should best avoid.

UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie 3 DVD 1
Gets back to doing what the series does best: brainless fan-service comedy of reassuring emptiness.

Karin DVD 1
Though essentially a teen vampire romantic comedy with an unusual twist, that twist is enough to lend a fresher feel to typical story elements. It may take a while to get truly funny but does produce a satisfying amount of laughs and drama.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya DVD 1
Though primarily an otaku funfest, this funny, clever, and eccentric take on a girl's quest for the abnormal, and the boy she drags along for the ride, became one of 2006's biggest hits in Japan. Now the invasion of America has begun.

Nerima Daikon Brothers DVD 3
The Daikon Brothers end it here, sadly enough. There's some marginally more serious content here at the end, but it never forgets that it is, at heart, a no-holds-barred comedy. At which it succeeds beautifully.

Blame! DVD
Thirty-seven minutes isn't long enough to let us get fully absorbed into this stark vision of the future, even though it's plenty of time to appreciate the richly detailed visuals. If you want to know what happens, read the manga.
