Gmail finally open for business

Google has finally announced full availability of Gmail to Australians, who will no longer need to scrounge an invite from an existing Gmail user.

"Gmail is now generally available in Australia and New Zealand. From today, users in Australia and New Zealand will be able to go to www.gmail.com and create a free account, without an invitation or signing up through Google SMS," the company said.

"Gmail remains otherwise unchangedâ€"offering over 2.7GB of free space, built-in Google search technology, great spam protection and a fast and innovative user experience."

When Google says "otherwise unchanged", it really means it. GMail will still remain in beta, more than two years after it launched and millions of users later.

According to Google's Australian press spokesman, "We have strong internal metrics for what it means for our product to be in or out of beta, and we will take Gmail out of beta once we feel we've met these metrics. However, users should know that Gmail is reliable and is quickly becoming more widely available. In fact, tens of millions of users around the world already depend on Gmail every day."

Since Gmail is s still in beta, there's obviously room for improvement. What's on your wishlist? Post below and I'll turn it into an open letter for Google.

Personally, I wish GMail could be toggled to display messages in a traditional chronologically-ordered list, as it's often hard to see what the latest message in a conversation is, and in a high-volume mailbox that means conversations can quickly be buried and missed.

GMAIL IS ALREADY EXCELLENT.

I WOULD BE GRATEFUL IF CONSIDERATION COULD BE GIVEN TO PROVIDING A 'READ RECIPT' FACILITY, THAT WOULD NOTIFIER THE SENDER OR RECIPIENT WHEN A MESSAGE HAS BEEN READ

Checkout http://demo.atmail.com/ - A very well polished Webmail app, and even supports syncing your Outlook contacts, calendar & tasks

I would like to see the extended products and even some gmail functions to use the functionality that gtalk within gmail uses. Let me explain, you know how the applet window for gtalk conversations exists within the gmail window? Well, what if that could be used for looking at your contacts, or for google calendar (I still dont use it as much as I could). It would be nice if I wouldn’t have to physically move through webpages to view content. Though I am not sure if what I am requesting is even possible.

Gmail would be even better if they would give the user an option to NOT keep a copy of the emails anywhere on the account-including the Trash bin. Also, allowing the user to bypass the Gmail spam folder and dump all emails into the inbox would be a great help. Their spam filters arent always accurate and I like to decide what is and isn't spam.

It's been a while since I checked my gmail... Last time I was there I thought this:

*Better spam control.
*Option for different views: Less pretty, more function for example.
*IMAP support without any dodgy inbetweens.

There's probably more, but I couldnt be bothered listing them. GMail's a great alternative for those without real email available, but it's still a lame webmail thing.

What Gmail really needs is a button on the smam folder to automatically block addresses from selected spam E-mails, I get tons of spam daily from hundreds of different addresses, and a easy option for adding them automatically would greatly simplify the arduous task it currently requires, that said Gmail is an excellent mail client!

I think that gmail needs a function whereby you can automatically delete emails (or send to spam folder) with selected words/content that you may have previously received.

If I forward messages from my Gmail to another address, it deletes them and places them in the trash causing my Gmail to remain full!

Gmail should either "permanently delete" the messages upon forwarding them or not count messages in the trash can towards your limit.

When you forward an e-mail, it would be preferable if the whole conversation wasn't sent. You should be able to specify which part you want to forward without having to cut and paste a new message to get around it. You can't reply to the initial message and then forward the initial message only to someone else without your reply being forwarded as well. That's just not cool.

i love gmail. the only gripe i have about it is its relative unavailability at the moment. if more people were to use gmail, then features such as google talk would be cooler. they just opened gmail in japan, so i believe the phenomenon will spread soon enough. then again, an increase in popularity will ultimately lead to a decrease in novelty.
