7 اکتوبر 2023ء کو اسرائیل کے سمر ٹائم (UTC+3) کے لگ بھگ 06:30 بجے،[52] حماس نے "آپریشن طوفان الاقصیٰ" کے آغاز کا اعلان کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ اس نے غزہ کی پٹی سے اسرائیل میں 20 منٹ کے اندر اندر 5000 سے زیادہ راکٹ فائر کیے ہیں۔ اسرائیلی ذرائع نے بتایا ہے کہ غزہ سے کم از کم 3000 پروجیکٹائل داغے گئے ہیں۔ راکٹ حملوں میں کم از کم پانچ افراد ہلاک ہو گئے۔[57][67][60][68] دھماکوں کی اطلاع غزہ کے آس پاس کے علاقوں اور سہل شارون کے شہروں بشمول غدیرا، ہرتزیلیا، تل ابیب اور عسقلان میں موصول ہوئی تھی۔[68] بئر سبع، یروشلم، رحوووت، ریشون لصیون اور پاماچیم ایئربیس میں بھی فضائی حملے کے سائرن بجائے گئے۔[69][70][71] حماس نے جنگ کی کال جاری کی، جس میں اعلیٰ فوجی کماندار محمد ضیف نے "ہر جگہ مسلمانوں کو اسرائیل میں حملہ کرنے کی اپیل کی"۔ فلسطینی مجاہدین نے غزہ کی پٹی کے قریب اسرائیلی کشتیوں پر بھی فائرنگ کی، جب کہ غزہ کی سرحدی باڑ کے مشرقی حصے میں فلسطینیوں اور آئی ڈی ایف کے درمیان جھڑپیں ہوئیں۔ شام کو حماس نے اسرائیل کی طرف تقریباً 150 راکٹوں کا ایک اور بیراج داغ دیا، جس میں یفنہ، جفعاتایم، بت یام، بیت دگان، تل ابیب اور رشون لیزیون میں دھماکوں کی اطلاع ہے۔ اس کے بعد 8 اکتوبر کی صبح ایک اور راکٹ بیراج ہوا، جس میں ایک راکٹ عسقلان کے برزیلائی میڈیکل سینٹر پر گرا۔[72][73] حماس نے سدیروت پر 100 راکٹ بھی فائر کیے ہیں۔ 9 اکتوبر کو حماس نے تل ابیب اور یروشلم کی سمت میں ایک اور بیراج فائر کیا، ایک راکٹ بین گوریون ہوائی اڈے کے ٹرمینل کے قریب گرا۔
